I just yesterday learned of Alan's death. Although we moved in many of the same circles, we had not come to know one another until a few years ago; we met and became instant, fast friends with much in common. I invited him to speak to my students on my campus, and he was a marvelous inspiration to several of them, a boon to all. He was a gentle soul, a hard-working educator, a wonderful talent, and a major contributor. I am proud to have known him, however briefly. RIP.
