Book of Condolences

Willi Barton, or Mrs. Barton was more than just my high school homeroom teacher at Woodstock International School in India during the late '90s. She became like a parent figure and a mentor to me. Along with her husband, James, Willi was dedicated to discipling and mentoring any students eager to learn God’s word. They warmly opened their home to several of us for discipleship group and Friday Morning Bible Study (FMBS). Their house became a haven for many of us who needed a community far from home. Willi’s hospitality was legendary, as she treated us to her famous chocolate, lemon, or carrot cake and coffee. These gatherings were not just about food but also about lively discussions on God’s word. Willi stood firm and proclaimed her convictions in her faith in Christ and did not shy away from those who challenged it. She was a meticulous teacher, committed to her profession, but her true passion and animation shone when she talked about Jesus. After Woodstock, I had the opportunity to study at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, NI. By then, James and Willi had returned to Ireland but continued their connection with India. They generously opened their home to me and my Chinese friend Tina, who also needed a place to stay. Despite just settling back into life in Ireland, Willi and James were incredibly hospitable and accommodating. Over meals, I learned from their stories of faith and enjoyed meeting their extended family in Northern Ireland. Willi once again became a mentor and friend, challenging me to grow and live out my faith. Among her many roles, Willi Barton was a wise older woman in Christ who trained younger women to love and serve their families. My husband, Jonathan (also one of her students at Woodstock), and I were inspired by Willi and James to start a youth group and open our home for discipleship. It’s impossible to speak about Willi without mentioning Dr. James Barton. Their love for each other has been, and will continue to be, an inspiration of what a godly Christian marriage should look like. We find solace knowing that Willi is in God’s presence, but our hearts are heavy knowing that James has had to say goodbye to his precious wife and friend of many years. May the Lord comfort you, James, and bring you peace. Sharon Abraham Dehradun, India
