CENTINEO Bernadette M. (89) Passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 22, 2026.
On October 22, 1936, Bernadette (McCool) Centineo was born in Dungannon, County Tyrone, to Denis and Catherine McCool.
Growing up in a loving Family in Ireland, Bernadette sought out her passion and pursued nursing at Musgrave Park Hospital Belfast, Northern Ireland. Following nursing school, she traveled to London, England and attended midwifery school at Thorpe Coombe Maternity Hospital. Upon graduation, she worked as a midwife until 1962.
Then in October 1962, Bernadette and her dear friend, Mary (Quinn) Schuler, took a chance and departed Europe for adventure and a new life in the U.S. Arriving in America, Bernadette worked at St. Claire’s Hospital in Manhattan, NY. While there caring for a patient, Mr. Charles Centineo, Bernadette met his son and future husband, Anthony. Bernadette and Anthony married in November 1965 and raised four children in Valley Stream, NY. Bernadette instilled her passion and Christian belief in service to others in all she did.
Bernadette continued her nursing career providing comforting care to patients at East Rockaway Nursing Home where she worked from 1976 until her retirement in 2000.
Since then, Bernadette was surrounded by family offering all she came in contact with amazing life lessons, perspective, laughter, and love.
Bernadette is survived by her brother Brendan McCool (Bernadette) of Dungannon, Northern Ireland, her children Paul Centineo (Ashley) of Valley Stream, NY, Andrew Centineo (Renee’) of Fairfax, VA, Anthony Centineo of Red Hook, NY, and Kathleen Hawkins (Andrew) of Valley Stream.
Additionally, Bernadette was the loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren; Allison, Victoria & Caitlin Centineo; AJ, Brooke and Madelyn Centineo; and Colleen, Charlie, Patrick, Brendan and Sean Hawkins.
Bernadette is preceded in death by her parents Denis and Catherine McCool, her sister Kathleen (McCool) Hamilton, her loving husband Anthony, and her granddaughter Emilie Centineo.
