Date of Death: Thursday 11th July 2024

The death has taken place of the late James Anthony (Jim) Gallagher, 11th July 2024, at home, Astoria, New York (formerly of 21, Elmwood Road)

Beloved son of the late William and Kathleen Gallagher (née Toner) and loving brother of Liam, Anne, Paul and the late Maureen.

Requiem Mass Wednesday, 17th July Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Astoria, New York at 9.30am (2.30pm our time).

Jim will be sorely missed by his children Martin, David, Michelle, Colm and Lisa, grandchildren and great grandchildren, his partner Barbara and by his wide circle of relatives and friends in New York, Newcastle and Derry. St. Columba and Sister Clare intercede for him.

James Anthony Gallagher, of Astoria, Queens, NY passed on July 11, 2024 at home after a final bout with cancer. Jim was surrounded by his loving family, most notably his life partner, Barbara Leven. Their deep love and mutual respect will endure far beyond the nearly three decades they spent together.

A proud Derry City, N. Ireland, man as well as a proud American, he visited family and friends in Ireland often and never hesitated to fly over for a communion, wedding or other significant event. He never forgot a birthday or an anniversary.

A kind, generous, peace loving and compassionate man, Jim pursued a career in the hospitality industry. He became the quintessential Irish bartender at Molly’s Pub & Shebeen on 23rd St. and 3rd Ave. in Manhattan, pouring the perfect pint of Guinness and amassing a loyal following for over 25 years.

Jim never forgot his roots in Derry City, N. Ireland, and the troubles there during the 60s and 70s. So much so that he became an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The AOH sponsored “Project Children” which brought children over from N. Ireland to live with American families for the summer and leave their “troubles” behind.

Jim was a man of deep faith and was active in his church, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Astoria, Queens, ushering at Sunday Mass.

He is survived by his partner, Barbara Leven, 3 siblings, 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Book of Condolences

My old friend. I first met Jim in Molly's in 2003. This was the first of a number of trips to New York and each time calling to him was a trip highlight. His brother, Liam, had taught me at school. He missed some of the food from home. Plain bread was a favourite. I would take him large bags packed with bread, soda bread, potato bread, sausages, bacon and mincemeat from a Derry butcher. His eyes lit up at the feast. One day, a young couple were sitting at the bar. They could not understand his excitement at receiving loaves of bread. Later that week, I called back to see him and he told me he had to give them a few slices of bread to go home and make a bacon sandwich so they could understand the big deal! He was an Arsenal Football Club fan. When they played my team and their rivals, Tottenham, he would call me at home and win or lose, have a chat or leave a voice message. He was always great company and my next trip to New York will be really sad, knowing he won't be in Molly's when I go there.
