My sincere condolences to Duncan's family. I had the honor and the great pleasure of getting to know him while visiting prisons on behalf of the International Committee of the Red Cross between 1987 and 1992. He was an extrordinary interlocutor: open-minded, receptive to potential criticism, honestly dedicated to his mission and sincerely caring about the well being of those in his custody. He became a friend and I, as well as several colleagues, will sadly miss him ! Rest in Peace Duncan.

My condolences to Barbara and extended family. I am a former Irish republican prisoner, having spent 16 years in Long Kesh. I don’t believe I met Duncan during that time but did in later years. I spoke on the same platform as him at a number of conferences, the last being in France. Although we had very differing political viewpoints and lived experience I found him to be a man of integrity. I’m very sorry for your loss. Laurence
